This guide is educational and does not replace a veterinary diagnosis. Acupuncture is used alongside, not instead of, conventional care, and the evidence differs from condition to condition. See our Medical Disclaimer.
See a veterinarian first
Contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital immediately, and do not delay care to try acupuncture, if:
- Your dog has a hard, swollen belly, retching without bringing anything up, or is restless (possible bloat).
- Vomit or stool contains blood.
- Vomiting or diarrhea is repeated, and your dog seems weak or dehydrated.
- Yellow gums, skin or eyes with lethargy.
This list is not complete. If you are worried, call your veterinarian.
What is IBD, liver and digestive disease?
Long-lasting vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite or weight loss can come from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), food reactions, pancreatitis, liver disease and other conditions. A diagnosis is needed before treatment can be chosen.
Signs to look for
- Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea
- Weight loss
- Poor appetite or picky eating
- Belly pain or bloating
- Yellow tinge to gums or eyes
How veterinarians diagnose and treat it
Your veterinarian may recommend bloodwork, fecal tests, imaging and sometimes endoscopy with biopsies. Treatment may include a diet trial, medicines, probiotics and, for IBD, immune-modulating drugs. Liver disease needs its own plan.
Where acupuncture may fit
Acupuncture is used by some practitioners as an add-on for appetite, nausea and digestive comfort. It cannot treat IBD or liver disease on its own.
What the evidence says: Evidence for acupuncture in canine digestive disease is limited. Reports are mostly small studies and clinical experience.
Results vary from dog to dog and cannot be promised. To find a practitioner, see the veterinary acupuncture directory.
Acupuncture points commonly discussed for this condition
These points are named in traditional dog acupuncture charts for the signs described on this page. Each guide gives the location, traditional indications and safety notes. Listing a point is not a promise that it will help, and points are chosen by the practitioner for each dog.

Frequently asked questions
Can acupuncture treat IBD?
Not on its own. IBD needs veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Acupuncture may be considered for added comfort.
When is vomiting an emergency?
If it is repeated, contains blood, comes with a swollen belly, or your dog is weak, see a veterinarian immediately.
Do diet changes help?
Often, yes, but only with your veterinarian’s guidance, because the right diet depends on the diagnosis.
