This guide is educational and does not replace a veterinary diagnosis. Acupuncture is used alongside, not instead of, conventional care, and the evidence differs from condition to condition. See our Medical Disclaimer.

See a veterinarian first

Contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital immediately, and do not delay care to try acupuncture, if:

  • Your cat has not eaten for 24 hours or more.
  • Gums, ears or skin look yellow.
  • Your cat is vomiting, drooling or very lethargic.
  • Your cat has lost weight quickly.

This list is not complete. Cats hide illness, so if you are worried, call your veterinarian.

What is Hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver)?

Hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver, happens when a cat that is not eating breaks down body fat faster than the liver can process it. It can follow almost any illness or stress that stops a cat from eating, especially in overweight cats. It is serious but often treatable when caught early.

Signs to look for

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss and weakness
  • Yellow gums, ears or skin
  • Vomiting and drooling
  • Lethargy and hiding

How veterinarians diagnose and treat it

Your veterinarian will do bloodwork and imaging and look for the illness that caused the loss of appetite. Treatment usually means nutritional support, often through a feeding tube, plus fluids, anti-nausea medicine and treating the underlying cause. Cats should not be forced to fast, and diets should only change under veterinary guidance.

Where acupuncture may fit in recovery

Acupuncture is sometimes added during recovery to support appetite and nausea. It is not a treatment for the liver itself and does not replace nutritional support.

What the evidence says: Evidence for acupuncture in cats with liver disease is very limited.

Results vary from cat to cat and cannot be promised. To find a practitioner, see cat acupuncture near me in our directory.

Acupuncture points for cats commonly discussed for this condition

These feline acupuncture points are named in traditional charts for the signs described on this page. Each guide gives the location, traditional indications and safety notes. Listing a point is not a promise that it will help, and points are chosen by the practitioner for each cat.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a cat go without eating?

Even one to two days without food can be risky for a cat. Contact your veterinarian.

Can I force-feed my cat?

Do not syringe-feed without veterinary guidance, because it can cause aspiration and food aversion.

Can acupuncture restore appetite?

Some practitioners use it for appetite support, but results are not predictable and it does not replace veterinary care.
