This guide is educational and does not replace a veterinary diagnosis. Acupuncture is used alongside, not instead of, conventional care, and the evidence differs from condition to condition. See our Medical Disclaimer.

See a veterinarian first

Contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital immediately, and do not delay care to try acupuncture, if:

  • Your cat is breathing with an open mouth, or breathing fast at rest.
  • Your cat suddenly cannot use the back legs, cries out and the paws feel cold.
  • Your cat collapses or has blue or gray gums.
  • Your cat is lethargic and refuses to eat.

This list is not complete. Cats hide illness, so if you are worried, call your veterinarian.

What is cardiomyopathy and heart failure?

Cardiomyopathy is disease of the heart muscle and is the most common heart disease in cats. Many cats show no signs until it is advanced, and some first present with sudden breathing trouble or a blood clot that causes hind leg paralysis. Early detection by a veterinarian matters.

Signs to look for

  • Fast or effortful breathing at rest
  • Reduced activity and hiding
  • Poor appetite
  • Sudden hind leg weakness

How veterinarians diagnose and treat it

Diagnosis usually involves a heart ultrasound (echocardiogram), chest X-rays, blood pressure and blood tests. Treatment depends on the type and stage and may include medicines to remove fluid, support the heart and reduce clot risk. Your veterinarian may ask you to count your cat’s breathing rate at rest at home.

What acupuncture can and cannot do

Acupuncture does not treat heart disease. A few practitioners offer it for comfort, with agreement from your veterinarian or cardiologist.

What the evidence says: There is no good evidence that acupuncture improves heart disease in cats.

Results vary from cat to cat and cannot be promised. To find a practitioner, see cat acupuncture near me in our directory.

Acupuncture points for cats commonly discussed for this condition

These feline acupuncture points are named in traditional charts for the signs described on this page. Each guide gives the location, traditional indications and safety notes. Listing a point is not a promise that it will help, and points are chosen by the practitioner for each cat.

Frequently asked questions

Can acupuncture treat heart disease in cats?

No. Heart disease needs veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Acupuncture may be discussed only as comfort support.

How can I tell if my cat is struggling to breathe?

Open-mouth breathing, fast breathing at rest or visible effort are emergencies. Ask your veterinarian how to count the resting breathing rate.

What is a blood clot in cats?

A clot can block blood flow to the back legs, causing sudden pain and paralysis. It is an emergency.
